Chart of the Day — Where Have All the 1B Prospects Gone?

Paula Cole wants to know. The chart below shows the total number of 1B prospects ranked each season since 1990 by Baseball America. The 2014 list will potentially have just Jose Abreu, who is going to open the season at the MLB level after defecting from Cuba. CJ Cron is the only other 1B ranked higher than 4th in any of their organizational reports. Jonathan Singleton was ranked in both the Baseball Prospectus Top 101 list as well as Keith Law’s top 100 (who ranked 1B Dominic Smith 37th), but he is ranked just 7th in BA’s Top Ten for the Astros List.




Graph of the Day – Revisited

The other day, I posted a graph that showed the growing trend of batters swinging at pitches out of the strike zone. Turns out, the batters haven’t changed as much as how the strike zone is being determined by the data source (BIS). Note the relationship between the Zone% & O-Swing% lines
